Fall Concert: Happy 250th Again, America!

  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church 414 East Broad Street Westfield, NJ, 07090 United States (map)

Celebrate America's 250th birthday with the second installment of SOMA’s Many Voices, One Nation, a musical journey through the rich and varied traditions that have shaped American music. Our program opens with Aaron Copland’s stirring Fanfare for the Common Man.

Our fall concert also presents the world premiere of Robert Sirota's Fantasia on Billings's “When Jesus Wept,” a contemporary reimagining of a haunting melody by one of America's earliest composers.

The first half of the program closes with Bohuslav Martinů's sparkling Sinfonietta La Jolla, a vibrant and rhythmically inventive work written by the Czech composer during his years in America.

The second half opens with George Whitefield Chadwick's “Jubilee,” from his Symphonic Sketches, a characteristic example of America’s emerging musical identity in the late nineteenth century. The program closes with another work by Aaron Copland, his beloved Billy the Kid Suite, an evocation of the Wild West, full of folk tunes and cowboy songs.
