Winter Concert: Winter Dreams

Chase away the winter blues with SOMA’s March program, and bask in the warmth of music that moves from American lyricism to French brilliance to Russian romantic sweep. We open with the First Essay for Orchestra by Samuel Barber, a compact and powerful work full of dramatic energy and soaring lines. Next, St. Paul’s own Mark Hyczko performs as soloist in Francis Poulenc’s Concerto in G minor for Organ, Strings, and Timpani, a vivid masterpiece that shifts effortlessly between grandeur, wit, and moments of luminous calm. The afternoon concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, “Winter Dreams,” a richly evocative journey filled with sweeping melodies and sparkling orchestral color, music that captures the season’s chill, beauty, and wonder.
